Great Torrington has a fascinating and colourful history. It is particularly famous for the Battle of Torrington in 1646 when, in the English Civil War, the Parliamentarians under Sir Thomas Fairfax, swept into the town and defeated Lord Hopton and his men marking the end of Royalist resistance in the Westcountry.
Great Torrington boasts an excellent selection of visitor attractions. From internationally renowned Dartington Crystal Ltd, producing clear, contemporary glassware to export around the world, to the small traditional country craft at Monkleigh Pottery.
The beautiful new Royal Horticultural Society gardens, Rosemoor and Barometer World, (with the biggest collection of barometers in the world) are both just outside Torrington, whilst the colourful, new, interactive, 17th century family experience at Torrington 1646, the heart of the "Cavalier Town" is conveniently in the town centre.
