Dartmoor & West Devon

Dartmoor is not just about the landscape; there’s a lot more to it than that. It’s not just about the ponies, or the tors, the history or the heritage; but that’s a good start.

Dartmoor

It’s about getting out there, experiencing new things.

This living, breathing, working landscape holds the secret to a past that stretches back over the centuries, and a future that is both sustainable and green. This wild, beautiful environment – the largest area of open country in southern England – is dotted with bustling market towns and villages, and home to 33,500 people. Explore Tavistock’s historic high streets, or Chagford’s village square, nooks and crannies of Widecombe, and you will discover a way of life that has all but vanished in these busy times. Browse amongst the stalls at a farmers’ market, pop into a busy bakery, and listen to the gossip in the pubs and cafés. It’s a slower pace of life, sure, but then it takes time to produce the very best.

Go on, get out there.
Fall in love with Dartmoor, not just for the way it looks, but for what it can offer. 2,040ft is the height at which you will be standing when you have climbed High Willhays. The River Dart has some of the best canoeing in the country. The most elite military force in the world uses Dartmoor as its training ground; that’s a pretty high standard and one we like to keep. The landscape is simply breathtaking, whether you are experiencing it from a horse, your trusty bike, in a boat or on foot, with friends, on your own or with family in tow. Dartmoor spans over 368 square miles – what are you waiting for, you have a lot of exploring to do!

So much to see, so little time.
Indulge your inner horticulturalist at one of the many gardens, lose yourself in an abbey, wander ancient ruins, feel studious at a museum, and find peace in a church. See miniature Dartmoor ponies, pet llamas, swim in the open air, visit a zoo. Not enough choice? How about Dartmoor prison, or the art of pottery, see real live Dartmoor pixies and working farms. Visit castles, take in a play, take a masterclass. Thought Morris dancing and snail racing had long since disappeared? It’s all part of what makes Dartmoor real.

From quaint thatched B&B to grand castle and everything in between, Dartmoor has accommodation to suit all tastes and pockets. Visit www.dartmoor.co.uk for more information.

Ruby Country
Some of Devon's most beautiful countryside lies around the traditional market towns of Holsworthy and Hatherleigh. This is Ruby Country, named after the local Ruby cattle. Tranquil villages, winding lanes and rolling landscape make a wonderful base for cycling, rambling, horse riding and fishing.

Tamar Valley
West of Dartmoor lies the Tamar Valley, an area of breathtaking scenery and steeped in history, designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Tamar Valley has a rich and varied wildlife, particularly the estuary, which is an important haven for birds such as the avocet and little egret.

In the Tamar Valley you'll find something for all tastes - great walking country, trips on river and train, delightful villages and local attractions. Its fascinating mining heritage, beautiful historic houses and glorious gardens make for a great mix. Then relax in a pub, cafe or restaurant where you can enjoy the delicious local food.

With plenty of accommodation to suit all purses, you'll find the Tamar Valley is ideal for holidays, short breaks and days out.
