Surfing in Devon
Powerful Atlantic swells sweeping down on Devon's two coasts create superb surf all year
around. No wonder then, with such exhilarating challenges, Devon is so popular with surfers.
North Devon is chief target for the winds and seas, making it a great centre for surfing with its big-wave world-class surf beaches. Croyde's quality beach-break waves are the equal of anywhere in the world. Saunton Sands' slower breaking waves are ideal for beginners and longboarders. Lynmouth's pebble and rock bottom creates perfect breaking waves and longer rides.
Along the south Devon coast, loactions such as Challaborough, Wembury and Bantham all attract good numbers, especially in winter when the surf is more consistent. Ineed, as any surfer knows, surf quality changes with the prevailing wind, swell and tide, so you can find a whole range of experiences in just one location.
Beginners of all ages will soon be riding the waves with a course at one of a selection of Devon's surf schools and more experienced surfers can refine their techniques. Devon hosts international and local surfing events and competitions year-round.
