Prince Hall Hotel, Dartmoor

Enter the impressive double-door porch of Prince Hall Hotel and you enter a countryside cocoon of comfort, relaxation and tranquillity complemented by excellent cuisine and fine wines – and on top of it all experience genuine caring from the hosts Fi and Chris Daly, and their team. From the warm hospitality immediately apparent on your arrival to the genuine concern on your departure that you have enjoyed your stay, you are constantly made to feel pampered and lacking for nothing. Well-behaved dogs, too, are most welcome and are allowed in all public rooms except the restaurant.

Bedrooms and public areas are spacious and elegant, furnished in true country house style. Views over the moorlands, glancing across the West Dart River at the foot of the sloping fields, are truly magnificent and even the most laid-back will probably feel the urge to take a walk at least down to the bridge and back.

Walking, fishing for trout or salmon, clay pigeon shooting, croquet, riding or golf – these country sports and activities are all within easy, if not immediate, reach of the hotel. Tuition and guides can be arranged for the inexperienced – what a delightful setting in which to improve one’s skills! For less strenuous pleasure seeking, there are numerous National Trust and historic interest buildings in the area, not to mention the gardens and, not so far away, Cornwall’s unique Eden Project. So, although situated in the heart of Dartmoor, Prince Hall is the perfect starting point to partake of the Westcountry’s many and varied attractions.

In the AA rosetted restaurant, chef Ashley Wright oversees the team. Innovative menus constantly incorporate first-rate local produce. From crusty clotted cream to mouth-wateringly succulent organic meat, including a large amount of game, meals are freshly prepared and beautifully presented. The four-course dinner titillates the palate and restores the energy expended during the day. This is complemented by a fine cross section of New World, classic and locally produced wines.

Whether visiting Prince Hall for an active break, a gourmet experience or just to “get away from it all”, you are assured of hospitality in the true sense of the word.
