Road Directions

Please use our directions below rather than a satellite navigation system as these have been known to take you via a longer route. However if you do want to use your system the GPS co-ordinates for Higher Bowden are: West: 3.37.30 North: 50.19.50 and our postcode is TQ6 0LH.

From the South East – take the M3 then the A303 heading South West. Near Ilminster follow the signs to the M5 (which is a short detour that will help you avoid the very busy road through Honiton) then go South on the M5.

From the Midlands and the North – proceed to the M5 and continue south to the end of the motorway, just south of Exeter.

From the end of the M5, Higher Bowden is 40 miles and just over an hour away

At the southerly end of the M5 the road splits in two, bear to the right following the signs A38 Plymouth. After 15 miles, just past Ashburton, take the A384 left to TOTNES. You are now 35 minutes and 16 miles away from Higher Bowden. (If you wish to stop for shopping, there is a Morrisons Superstore in Totnes, open weekdays until 8.00 pm and Sundays until 4.00 pm – this is straight over the lights and towards the town centre, there is also a Sainsbury’s Superstore just 3 miles from Higher Bowden please see details on reverse of this page.)

If you do not make a shopping detour now, turn right at the lights in Totnes, following the signs to Dartmouth, and proceed straight on for 5 miles (ignore brown sign to ‘Bowden House’ – this is unconnected with Higher Bowden); go through Harbertonford to Halwell and turn left straight after the church up a steep hill, turn left, and again follow the signs to Dartmouth.

After two miles go past the Woodlands Leisure Park on your right and the Dartmouth Golf Club on your left and straight on just past the Garden Centre on your right; slow down here and take the first narrow turning right signposted ‘Ash’ just before the Sportsman’s Arms on your left. There is also a brown sign to ‘Fast Rabbit Farm’ which helps as a useful marker. Go 1 mile to the junction (Bugford Cross), turn right and immediately left. Go another mile to a blind crossroads – open windows to listen for traffic – and go straight over in the direction of ‘Ash Tree Farm’ (sign will be in front of you on the left) - there is a red post box in the wall on your right - for one final mile. If clear you can see the sea and Higher Bowden is on the right going down a very steep hill. If you have reserved one of the courtyard cottages, take the first entrance on the right; if you are staying in one of our 6 person cottages (Buttercup, Wisteria, Rose, Oaktree and Hayloft) take the second entrance on the right and park in the designated space(s) for your cottage.

If you approach from Torquay or Paignton – which we do not recommend – we can be reached from that direction by the following route:

Follow signs out of town to Dartmouth, bearing right to Kingswear and take the Higher Ferry (right at the junction). Please note there can be lengthy delays during main holiday times. Follow the one-way system off the ferry and up College Hill, past the Royal Naval College, taking the road signposted to Stoke Fleming and Blackpool Sands, which bears left at the top of the hill.

*Follow this road for about half a mile and, where the main road turns to the left, make a right turn – almost straight ahead – into a narrow road signposted to Bowden. Proceed for two miles downhill and straight over a crossroads; pass the row of cottages on your right, go up the hill past the two detached white houses and turn next right by a postbox and the ‘Higher Bowden Cottages’ sign. The lower cottages (Buttercup, Wisteria, Rose, Oaktree and Hayloft) are your first entrance on the left and the courtyard cottages are reached by the second, higher entrance
