Below is the research conducted on behalf of Visit Devon to examine the level of tourism in the county and its contribution to the economy (STEAM report), the research conducted by the former South West Tourism for the region and VisitBritain's data and information on visits to the UK from overseas residents.  This is the most up-to-date information available.

STEAM Report for Devon
The STEAM report approaches the measurement of tourism at the local level from the supply side rather than from the demand side which can be costly and time-consuming.  This reports quantifies the local economic impact of tourism, from both stay and day visitors, by analysis of bed stock, estimates of revenue generated by tourists, categories of both serviced and non-serviced accommodation, estimates of the number of tourists and number of tourist days, estimates of employment supported by tourism, estimates of traffic implications of tourism and trend information annually for all output categories by zone.

The Value of Tourism report aims to paint as comprehensive and detailed picture as possible of the economic position of tourism in the South West, drawing together evidence on the volume and value of tourism from a number of sources and presenting it as a coherent whole. This annual face to face survey gathers information on visitors to the South West including: visitor profile, characteristics of their visit, how they booked accommodation, activity participation, opinions on the South West's environment, and visitor satisfaction.
